“Washington’s bias toward war.”
A conversation with Col. Lawrence Wilkerson.
Once again, war clouds gather over eastern Ukraine.
In recent weeks we have witnessed a surge in fighting in the Donbas region of Ukraine, accompanied by what is said to be a massing of Russian troops on Russia’s border with the tragically fractious nation caught in America’s geopolitical crossfire. The Pentagon’s European Command has raised its alert status to the highest level.
A press release from the Pentagon tells us that Defense Secretary Austin now assures his Ukrainian counterpart that the U.S. is committed “to building the capacity of Ukraine’s forces to defend more effectively against Russian aggression.”
All this as Ukrainian President Zelenskiy pushes for Ukraine to join NATO amid a chorus of new Cold Warriors in Washington and Brussels calling for more sanctions against Russia.
The Scrum counts this a major crisis in the making. And to discuss these developments, we are very honored to be joined in this webcast by the astute, ever-pithy Lawrence Wilkerson.
Col. Wilkerson had a long and distinguished career in the United States Army, where he was a member of the faculty of the U.S. Naval War College. He later served as special assistant to General Colin Powell while the latter was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the administration of George H.W. Bush. Wilkerson later served as director of the U.S. Marine Corps War College at Quantico, Virginia.
Wilkerson returned to public service in the early 2000s, this time at the State Department, as associate director of the Policy Planning Staff under Richard Haas and, from 2002 to 2005, as secretary of state Colin Powell’s chief of staff.
He is currently a distinguished adjunct professor of government and public policy at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Our conversation covered ground ranging from the proximate causes of the Ukrainian crisis to the “venality” of America’s foreign policy elite—those running “a predatory, crony-capitalist state in league with a national security state that finds its raison d’être in making war,” as the colonel not-so-delicately puts it.
Wilkerson’s critique of U.S. foreign policy since the end of the Cold War is nothing short of devastating. If only Washington would wake up and listen.
—James W. Carden and Patrick Lawrence.
Good morning Larry (& Patrick),
This morning I’m delighted to find you (thanks to Grayzone) in my email box as you spoke before the UN earlier this month. And yesterday, I found you & Patrick Lawrence on The Scrum with James Carden discussing the perilous situation in Ukraine: what with Biden & his Neo-Lib & -Con team provoking Russia again!…as the Democrats were doing under Obama, in part, as a punitive reaction to Russia granting Edward Snowden exile…which, according to both Dmitri Trenin & Sergey Lavrov, “Obama took as a personal affront” & took the unprecedented step of cancelling his up-coming meeting with Putin. However, the US hostile reaction was more related to the Maidan “revolution” (regime change/another “color revolution” orchestrated by the likes of Victoria Nuland & the late John McCain, plus Biden & son? with lotsa’ help from the usual American tax-payers-funded covert operatives such as NED (as I learned from both Mearsheimer & the late Robert Parry). It’s also enlightening to read Trenin’s 4/13 assessment of the Ukraine situation from Carnegie Moscow: https://carnegie.ru/commentary/84308
As for your initial trust & hopes for the Biden presidency, I would urge you to sign up for Glenn Greenwald’s Substack column as an invaluable addition to your “official morning briefing”, as you’ve described it at the Santa Fe Council on International program to which I brought you as the keynote speaker and also to Dartmouth to give your riveting Pearl Harbor Day lecture (12/7/17) on “The Decline of the American Empire” & hosted you at my former NH country home. Greenwald found himself forced to resign from The Intercept, which he founded (with $$$ support from Pierre Omidyar of PayPal?) when his editors rejected his pre-election profile of Biden: revealing his & his son’s shenanigans in Ukraine, not to mention his longtime role as Corporate America’s go-to-Delaware Senator/”Facilitator” at home. I suggest that you also might find Greenwald’s latest columns and his book on the wretched state of the “mainstream media” & its lies…as little more than an imperial propaganda machine.
Finally, because I’ve been inside American medicine since the mid-50’s together with my late husband, who was chair of the Dept. of ENT at Dartmouth…after our 9-year- long, arduous medical education journey through the OU medical school & internship & Mayo Clinic residency plus 2 years in the Public Health Service on the Taos, NM Reservation plus his faculty positions at the Cleveland Clinic then Dartmouth, where I obtained my clinical training in the Dept. of Psychiatry then was engaged in both clinical & research work here in the UNC-Chapel Hill Dept. of Psychiatry until my “retirement”…to continue my independent research & writing full time…I’ve been closely studying the evolving medical science research (See Swiss Policy Research: http://www.swprs.org ) on this Covid-19 virus and the misbegotten, politicized measures (such as compulsory muzzles & vaccination) to control it. So I adamantly disagree with your condescending attitude toward “the deplorables”/the military volunteers, who refused to be vaccinated…about the same % as healthcare professionals, who’ve refused it because they know that these vaccines have not be adequately tested & therefore have caused at least 5,000 documents deaths, as well as very serious side effects, not to mention the ominous vaccine based on genetic modification with the long-term effects on future generations unknown.
In fact, these measures are being used for behavior modification with Orwellian goals of social engineering for a dystopian cowardly new world, promoted as “The Great Re-set” by the Davos elite (to “manipulate/control the masses”/defend their wealth & power. Consider the latest analysis by the brilliant former British diplomat, Alistair Crooke & follow all of the links: https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2021/04/26/a-tightening-circle-of-replacement-politics/
Finally, re. the latest US-EU-NATO debacle in their attempt to bully the Russians by means of Ukraine, I find the analysis by the former Indian diplomat, M.K. Ghadrakumar, at his website, Indian Punchline, to be absolutely on the mark in his comprehension of Putin’s “red lines”: https://www.indianpunchline.com/putin-recites-the-distribution-of-power-in-central-europe/ Once again, that brilliant duo, Putin-Lavrov, have out-maneuvered our decadent Western Imperialists on the geopolitical chessboard! No wonder they fear them.
And another time, I’ll tell you how I challenged Jake Sullivan, that empty suit, now dressed up as the “National Security Adviser”, then as the speaker at a World Affairs Council program in his/their attempt at American Foreign Policy indoctrination in Manchester, NH March 2018.
